Janine Peters braves the heights of Table Mountain
Janine Peters, one of our lucky Facebook competition winners, redeemed her prize – two adult tickets to the top and back – on Saturday, August 14 when she and her boyfriend, Brett Smith, headed to the summit of Table Mountain with the Table Mountain Cableway.
“The weather was OK until we got up there and the wind started to pick up,” said Janine. “When we got to the far side of the summit I actually had to hang on to the bars!”
It could’ve been the wind, but we think vertigo might have had a part to play in Janine’s dependency on the railings. “I’ve always had a serious fear of heights, but I didn’t want to show my boyfriend that I was scared so I just went up. At the top I asked him, ‘Did you know I have a fear of heights?’ He said I was hiding it very well!”
Janine, who works at the University of Cape Town and lives in Melkbosstrand, was born in Cape Town but this was her first time at the top of Table Mountain.
Her favourite part of the experience was riding in the cable cars. “I was trying not to look down at first, so I just looked at people around me. But coming down, I was actually fine … ”

Once at the top, Janine and Brett were blown away by the serenity. “We stayed up there for about three hours. We were just sitting, talking, walking about, taking pictures; we went for coffee and just relaxed.”
“It was the quietness up there, and having that time to myself, that I particularly enjoyed, and the views. I loved the Lion’s Head side and I could see the Athlone Stadium!”
Asked if she’d ever brave the heights of Table Mountain again, Janine’s immediate response was, “Oh, definitely! I hope to do it again quite soon, and next time bring the kids along.”
