Flickr: Switching off Cape Town
Wherever the clock strikes 8.30pm tonight, millions of lights will be switched off in a symbolic sign to encourage people to choose more sustainable ways of living. The City of Cape Town will be switching off the lights at the base of Table Mountain, and we will be switching off the lights at the Cableway.
WWF South Africa is calling on everyone to switch off their lights for one hour, and to switch over to more sustainable ways of living, and doing business, beyond the hour.
The Cableway is a leader in responsible tourism and has made great strides in conserving energy: the energy generated by the descent of our cable cars sees 1 500kWh a month being fed back into the electricity grid; all our fittings use energy-saving bulbs; there are timers on outside lighting circuits; timers and blankets have been fitted on essential geysers; and the air-conditioning units are set to between 18 and 21 degrees Celsius.
