Visited table Mountain today (Saturday 17 Dec 2011) - Sites are beautiful but THE TOILETS ARE A DISGRACE.
The smell was absolutely revolting. The toilets are similar to that used on planes so the waste does not flush a way but remains in the tank. What made it even worse is that you can see the faeces if you happen to glance down.
For the new 7wonder of nature, you need to do something DRASTIC to improve tis situation.

Greetings
You are correct - the toilets used on top of Table Mountain are aeroplane toilets.
For Environmental reasons these are the only toilets that are suitable for the top of the mountain.
There are no pipes running from the top of the mountain so waste needs to be collected and then transported down after hours in the cablecar.
As we also need to transport all fresh water up - we have had to install toilets that use minimal amount of water.
It is precisely because we are a world heritage site that these highly eco friendly toilets have been installed.
However, there should NOT be an overpowering smell so I think perhaps the chemical mix that is used was not properly mixed on the day. We will investigate this.
We do plan to upgrade the toilets in April but they will essentially run on the same lines as we need to ensure we use as little water as possible and can’t build pipes down the mountain.
