Cableway first tourist attraction to win Platinum Heritage status
The Table Mountain Aerial Cableway has been awarded the highest level of responsible tourism status by a local environmental rating programme, making it the first and only tourism attraction in the country to achieve this.
The Heritage Environmental Rating Programme recognises companies for their environmentally friendly and responsible operating standards based on their effective environmental management systems and the impact these companies have on their environment.
The Table Mountain Cableway utilises many environmentally friendly practices, including the introduction of innovative water-saving measures that resulted in a massive reduction in water usage at the top station. From using 27 000 litres per week, the popular attraction now uses just 5 000 litres.
“We understand that operating a business in a national park means that we have to raise the benchmark in environmental standards. We are so proud that our use of innovative methods ensures that we run an environmentally responsible site and that this has been recognised by such a respected organisation,” said Sabine Lehmann, CEO of the Table Mountain Aerial Cableway Company, which operates the Cableway.
“We are pleased to award our highest certification level to Table Mountain Cableway in recognition of their commitment to environmentally responsible business practice and to meeting the strict criteria required of members,” said Neal Dickinson, operations manager of The Heritage Environmental Management Company.
The Cableway operates every day, weather permitting. For information call (021) 424 8181 or visit www.tablemountain.net.
