Table Mountain is Cape Town’s most photographed celebrity, but this grande dame of Cape Town is so much more than just a fun, photogenic pile of rocks and sand.
For instance, did you know that it’s one of the oldest mountains on the planet? It’s six times older than the Himalayas and five times older than the Rockies. And it’s so easy to visit, thanks to Cape Town Aerial Cableway.

Rotating cable cars around the world

As it twirls its way up to the summit, the 800 000 passengers who use it every year are treated to a 360⁰ view of the mountain itself, the magnificent Lion’s Head, the Cape Town city bowl, the V&A Waterfront and the deep blue Atlantic Ocean.

Does size (or height) really matter?

There’s no doubt Table Mountain is the most impressive sight in Cape Town. It dominates the city, but exactly how high above sea level is it? Well, that depends on who you speak to…
Encyclopaedia Britannica lists the mountain’s height as 1086m, while its Columbia counterpart claims it is 1087m high. Popular web encyclopaedia, Wikipedia, also carries the figure 1086, but its business partner, WikiAnswers, will tell you the highest point on Table Mountain is 1085m above sea level. Even South African Tourism and Cape Town Tourism disagree – the national body says the mountain is 1086m high, while the city’s sightseeing officials say it’s one metre lower.

Eugene Balie’s humbling job at the top of Cape Town
14 February 2010“Being on top of Table Mountain makes you see how small you are in the scheme of things, when you see how big the world is from up there,” says Table Mountain Aerial Cableway operator, Eugene Balie.
Eugene Balie first went up the Cableway as a child; he never thought that, one day, he’d operate the cable car.
Born 25 years ago in Cape Town, he started working as a cable car operator two months ago.
