Photo essay: Yellow flower fever

The Cape Floral Kingdom is the smallest and richest on Earth and is home to an amazing 8 200 plant species … and Table Mountain is covered in them! Although spring officially starts in September (tomorrow!) some specimens have already started flowering – all mellow and yellow.

It’s been such an exciting week – even though we had to close our doors to the public, it was riveting to watch the maintenance teams do their highly skilled thing! Here are some amazing images of the haul rope replacement process that took place last week. Thanks for your patience, and we look forward to hosting you again! Remember, you can buy your tickets online to skip the ticket office queue, which may be longer than usual this week considering we weren’t operating for a few days.

A beautiful betrothal

When Chandon Mare decided that Nell King would be the woman he is going to marry, picking a spot for the big proposal was a no-brainer. Being proposed to on Table Mountain “was the way she wanted it originally,” says Chandon. “She’s been dreaming of it happening this way since she was small. My mother works for Table Mountain Cableway so I put two and two together … It was the perfect setting.”

Flowering in August: common paperflower

The common paperflower (Edmondia sesamoides) is a common flower that blooms from August to January, according to Common Wildflowers of Table Mountain by Hugh Clarke and Bruce Mackenzie (Struik). It loves open, sunny areas and grows on a lightly-branched shrublet. Table Mountain is slowly but surely changing into a kaleidoscope of colour as fynbos flowers, big and small, begin to bloom. What a pleasure to witness the transformation! Don’t miss out ...
